Malaysia will be a laughing stock if GST removed

GST, which replaced the SST in 2015, has proven to be a more comprehensive, efficient and transparent tax system

(Berita Daily) –  Malaysia will become a laughing stock if the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is replaced with the Sales and Services Tax (SST), said Customs director-general T Subromaniam.

He said the 6% GST, which replaced the 16% SST in 2015, has been proven to be a more comprehensive, efficient and transparent tax system.

“Some 168 countries have already implemented the same system and the Middle Eastern nations are expected to follow suit, starting with the United Arab Emirates next year.

“The whole world will laugh at us if we were to revert to SST,” he said during the launching of the Kota Tinggi GST office.

Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said the SST would be re-introduced to replace the GST if the coalition wins the upcoming general election.

Subromaniam said that it was saddening to see allegations being made about GST on social media.

“What is even more sad is that some top leaders in the country are twisting the truth for their own benefit,” he added, reported The Star.
