Tanjung Bungah rep: Dr M’s role in Opposition hastened my decision to quit DAP

(The Star) – Penang DAP rep Teh Yee Cheu (pic) says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s presence in the Opposition bloc hastened his decision to leave the party.

The Tanjung Bungah assemblyman, who had voiced his intention to quit the party over various issues concerning the environment, said the former prime minister was also a contributing factor.

“He caused many of the problems we face today. He comes in without making apologies and now he leads the Opposition.

“In the past, he didn’t care about the Opposition but now he is making use of it,” he told a news portal during an interview.

Pribumi is now part of the Pakatan Harapan Opposition alliance, which includes PKR, DAP and Amanah.

“I felt that DAP, together with PKR and Amanah were already on the right track.

“What is (Pribumi’s) ideology? It is just about removing someone from office. What comes next?

“It doesn’t have a clear ideology nor a clear direction for the nation,” he said, adding that there are DAP veterans who also disagree with the new pact.

Teh, an environmental advocate, had in recent years become increasingly frustrated with his role in DAP, and being unable to influence reforms in the state government’s environmental and political policies.

On Sunday (Oct 29), Teh said he will leave DAP the moment the state assembly is dissolved, as he “cannot follow the party any longer”.

The last straw was when state government leaders kept claiming that the landslide in Tanjung Bungah on Oct 21 where 11 people died was on flat land.
