PM: Opposition’s promises detrimental to the economy

(The Star) – The Opposition’s promise to reduce tolls and subsidise fuel prices will only end up being detrimental to the economy and the environment, said the Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said apart from the fact that the Opposition does not know how to finance its policy, it would also promote more cars on the road.

“This would put more CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the air and contribute to a carbon footprint that we must reduce, not increase, if our world is to be a safe environment,” Najib said in his opening speech at the Kuala Lumpur International Youth Discourse 2017 on Sunday.

By contrast, Najib pledged that the Government would never put short-term political advantage ahead of the national interest.

For example, the Government has pledged to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 40% by 2020 based on the 2005 figure.

“By 2015, we had already achieved a reduction of 33%, so you can see that we are very much on course.

“These are real commitments, not cheap promises like you hear from some politicians who are promising less tolls and subsidised oil,” Najib said.
