Umno, PAS to protest at US embassy over Jerusalem decision

(The Star) – Umno will join PAS in a protest at the US embassy here on Friday (Nov 8) over President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno vice president said the party would not be joining the protest in a big way as it is in the midst of its general assembly, which ends Saturday (Nov 9).

Dr Ahmad Zahid said Umno will however hold talks with other political parties and non-governmental organisations for a more concerted protest.

“We will hold a solidarity rally to show our support for the people of Palestine who are facing this huge challenge,” he told reporters after the attending the Umno presidential address at the general assembly here Thursday.

“It is sensitive issue for all Muslims who will not take the matter calmly.

“There will not only be protests but my worry is that extremist groups will take unpredictable action,” said Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister and the home minister.

He was asked to comment on whether Umno would join PAS in its demonstration in front of the US embassy after Friday prayers.

Earlier, during his presidential address at the Umno general assembly, party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak told delegates that Malaysia rejects and will never accept the US proposal to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
