MCA, Gerakan joint assembly to deliver message to Chinese voters
(The Sun Daily) – A joint assembly by MCA and Gerakan this Saturday is meant to deliver a message to the Chinese voters that now is the time for them to rise, ahead of the 14th General Election.
Gerakan secretary-general Datuk Liang Teck Meng (pix) said the voters should take heed of Sarawakians – who gave Barisan Nasional (BN) a landslide victory in their most recent state election – and no longer be fooled by the opposition.
“We have to hold this rally because we want to deliver a clear message to voters, not only Malays and Indians, but especially the Chinese, that now is the time to ‘bangkit’ (rise). Because they have been fooled and cheated, especially by DAP.
“Just look at the recent Sarawak state elections, DAP only has seven seats compared to the 12 previously. Sarawakians have already ‘bangkit’, because they are tired of being fooled,” he told theSun today.
Liang issued a statement with MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan on Tuesday that the two parties would be holding a joint assembly on Jan 6 to strengthen the good working relationship between them.
The gathering, that is to be held at Wisma MCA, Kuala Lumpur is also aimed at expressing the parties’ commitment and determination in jointly preparing for the GE, and to present their past achievements
Liang also dismissed claims by some netizens that the gathering was a mere gimmick in facing the elections.
Describing the perception as being “very wrong”, the Simpang Renggam MP said both MCA and Gerakan have been working together since the latter’s inception, collaborating at different levels.
“If you look at some constituencies, like Bentong, you will realise that the parliamentary seats are being held by one party, while the state seats are held by the other.
“This is just one of the many examples that we have been working together for so long,” he said.
On talks of a possible merging of the two parties into a single unit, Liang said that was the final, long-term goal, but said it needed some time to materialise due to difficulties in achieving a common goal between the two at present.
