Wan Azizah playing the disinformation game
(LSS) – Some have asked me why Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail claims that her husband Anwar Ibrahim will be released on 11 June 2018 since he received a five-year jail term on 9th January 2015.
That would have brought the jail-term to end on Jan 8, 2020.
“Insya Allah, according to the law, he will be freed on June 11,” Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told 1,000 women delegates at the Pakatan Harapan Women convention held at Kajang today.
Key phrase is “according to the law”.
This is due the parole system law passed on 30 June 2008 under Pak Lah (whom Anwar ironically said was useless).
Since that law was passed, a prisoner is now entitled to a remission of one third of his sentence if the Prisons Department finds his rehabilitation while in prison to be satisfactory – or so-called time off for good behaviour.
The June 2018 date that Wan Azizah mentioned is the best case scenario and the maximum allowable reduction possible under the law – hence 1 1/2 years reduction out of 5 years.
It does not mean Anwar will automatically get the maximum allowable reduction. This will depend on the decision of the Parole Board under the Home Ministry (KDN) whether Anwar was a good prisoner or not.
To me, he is not a good prisoner as he has ponteng jail numerous times to go to court based on too many court cases to count and also time off in hospital.
And plus, he continually broke prison laws by issuing numerous statements and directives to his party from jail (who the heck gave him free WIFI in jail?).
Even if he is out of parole, Anwar is still not considered a free man but a parolee or Orang Di Parol (ODP) .
He will still be bound by the Parole Order (Subsection 46H(3) Prisons Act 1995 (Act 537), which has 27 conditions and restrictions.
Among the possible conditions could be that he has to regularly report to the parole officer at a time and address stated in the Parole Order.
He must also participate in a rehabilitation programme as directed and will not be allowed to leave the assigned district without the permission of the parole officer and prohibited from leaving Malaysia,
What Wan Azizah is doing by jumping the gun on the release date is that he wants to pressure the government to give her husband the maximum parole allowable and also give hope to Pakatan supporters.
This is also probably designed to incite hate against the govt should Anwar not be freed on that day since he was not considered a good prisoner.
Sneaky!
Maybe the Parole board should add on more time to Anwar’s sentence because his wife is so sneaky in trying to pre-empt the board’s decision.
