MCMC instructs portals to remove articles
(The Star) – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has instructed two online news portals to remove several articles which allegedly broke the law.
One portal was told to remove seven articles, while the other portal, Malaysia Today, was told to remove one article by 4pm Friday (Feb 16).
The letters stated that the MCMC had received public complaints regarding the articles.
“Based on the complaints, MCMC has looked into them and found that the articles contravene Section 233 of the MCMC Act 1998,” it stated in the letters dated Feb 15.
The commission also urged the portals to be more conscious in ensuring they do not publish news articles that go against the country’s laws.
All eight articles addressed current issues and local politics, while being openly critical of certain political parties and leaders.
Malaysia Today reproduced MCMC’s letter in full on its website, while the other news portal, when contacted, declined to comment on the matter.
