Tunku Aziz: Dr M may ditch PPBM for DAP
(MALAYSIA OUTLOOK) – A former DAP vice-chairman is predicting that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will abandon Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) for DAP.
Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim speculates that Dr Mahathir is looking for any reasonable excuse to abandon Pribumi so that he can jump ship to DAP, with his honour intact.
In a press conference at Eastin Hotel today, Tunku Aziz says this is because PPBM, the political party that Tun Mahathir had cobbled together, to take the country by storm and him to the Putrajaya, is in a shambles.
“With just weeks before GE14, his party looks set to remain stuck in the mud with no prospect of going anywhere,” Tunku Aziz says.
Yesterday, PPBM was reported to have filed a suit against the Registrar of Societies (RoS) for a declaration on the status of the registration of the party.
The opposition coalition has filed for a court order to compel RoS to reply to its letter seeking to register the coalition.
“By any measure, it is a failed party. Dr Mahathir who has a reputation for never taking responsibility for his own shortcomings, is looking for any reasonable excuse to abandon Pribumi so that he can jump ship to DAP, with his honour intact.
“He has found the perfect excuse for his failure – blame the Registrar of Societies who is merely doing its job.
Tunku Aziz further claims that Malays, by and large, feel betrayed and let down by Dr Mahathir working with a party that they see as both deeply anti-Malay and anti-Islam, the party that Dr Mahathir had demonised without end for decades.
“His about turn is seen by many Malays as opportunistic.
“In the circumstances, Dr Mahathir, having lost any hope of substantial Malay support, has to set aside his pride and work with DAP for Chinese votes which are crucial to his political survival.
“He will have to strike a private deal with Lim Kit Siang sooner rather than later for him to contest under the DAP logo.
