Six remanded over Ijok land issue

(The Star) – Six individuals have been remanded in connection with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into a RM1.18bil project in Ijok, Selangor.

The six, including two Datuks, will be held for four days until March 24.

Their remand order was granted by Magistrate Khir Nizam Jemari following an application by MACC prosecutors on Wednesday.

The six, including officials and staff from firms in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were picked up on Tuesday (March 20).

Five of them were detained when they turned up at the MACC headquarters for questioning while the sixth individual was picked up at his home in Petaling Jaya.

The land was given to settlers more than 20 years ago through a state programme to upgrade their standard of living.

Two companies were brought in to develop the land in 1997 but could not hold up their end of the bargain.

In 2009, then Selangor mentri besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim seized the land from the developers, who took the state to court.

The companies lost the case and appealed to the Federal Court.

In 2016, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali filed a settlement agreement and returned the seized parcel of land to the developers.

The land was then sold to a third party for RM1.18bil.
