PPBM deregistered

(FMT) – PPBM has been deregistered, a party official confirmed to FMT today, citing a letter from the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

The letter among others stated the party’s failure to furnish documents within the stipulated deadline, following an earlier notice requiring that the party submit minutes of its branch, divisional and central leadership meetings.

RoS will officially announce the decision later today.

The decision is made under Section 14(5) of the Societies Act 1966, which allows the registrar to “make a provisional order for the dissolution of the society” in the event that it fails to provide the required particulars. 

It comes amid speculation that Parliament will be dissolved tomorrow to pave the way for the 14th general election.

Just hours earlier, Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders said they had agreed to use a common symbol to go to the polls. The coalition said the symbol, which now will be either PKR, DAP or Amanah, will be announced at a rally in Johor tomorrow.

On March 29, PPBM submitted documents and other details as demanded by RoS, a day before a deadline it gave to the party to avoid being deregistred.

Earlier, a notice was issued by RoS under Section 14(2) of the Act, requesting the party to furnish minutes of its branch, divisional and central leadership meetings, as well as its statements of accounts.

This followed some 400 complaints from party members, said RoS.

PPBM was formed in August 2016 after Umno expelled Muhyiddin Yassin, who was its deputy president and deputy prime minister, and Mukhriz Mahathir, a former Kedah menteri besar, on June 24.

Muhyiddin is now PPBM president while Mukhriz is deputy president. The party is led by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
