You want BN? Take it, Nazri tells Gerakan
(FMT) – BN leaders needed to accept the fact that the coalition was no longer marketable, adding that it was because of component parties like MIC, MCA and Gerakan – which the people no longer supported – that made the coalition so hard to defend.
Umno Supreme Council member Nazri Abdul Aziz says the party is better on its own anyway.
Umno Supreme Council member Nazri Abdul Aziz has voiced his “support” for a meeting to be held to deliberate on whether Umno should be kicked out of Barisan Nasional (BN).
The idea was mooted by Gerakan Youth’s Andy Yong who said in a recent statement that BN component parties should hold a Supreme Council meeting to decide on whether to expel Umno instead of leaving the coalition.
Speaking to FMT, Nazri said BN was “gone” as a coalition and that if the other component parties wanted to have it, they could take it.
“I think we (Umno) want to be alone in the Peninsular. Gerakan is finished and if they want BN they can take it.
“Being in BN with Gerakan and being totally rejected by the rakyat is a huge burden,” he said.
When asked how he thought other parties would vote on the fate of Umno in BN, Nazri said he didn’t care.
“I don’t know, whatever they want to do, let them do it.”
He said BN leaders needed to accept the fact that the coalition was no longer marketable, adding that it was because of component parties like MIC, MCA and Gerakan – which the people no longer supported – that made the coalition so hard to defend.
“Parties like MIC, MCA, and Gerakan have been defeated so badly and it would be impossible for them to rise again in such a short time.
“If they can’t rise again then how is BN supposed to function? We need to accept the fact that BN is gone,” he said.
BN lost after a 61-year rule and only won a dismal 79 parliamentary seats compared to the 133 it won in the last election (GE13).
Umno, BN’s backbone, won 54 seats in GE14 compared to 88 in GE13.
MCA’s winnings went from seven seats to one, and MIC only won two seats compared to four previously. Gerakan did not win a single seat.
