The day Vincent Tan gave Anwar RM500 million

We knew that in Umno it is all about money. Even a Ketua Bahagian post will need about RM10 million. So RM500 million to become the Deputy President, which will allow you to become the Deputy Prime Minister, is not shocking. What was more of concern was the source of that money. That money came from Vincent Tan, who was Mahathir’s and Daim Zainuddin’s proxy cum crony. And the man who handed the money to Anwar was S. Nallakaruppan, his pimp masquerading as his ‘tennis partner’.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

The most famous ‘party rat’ in history is probably Sir Winston Churchill. Malaysians calls them ‘frogs’ but in the UK the act is calling ‘ratting’.

Churchill was elected a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1900 and the following year he disagreed with his party over several issues such as defence budgets and free trade. The Conservatives wanted to impose tariffs on imported goods from outside the British Empire, which goes against the spirit of free trade, and Churchill disagreed.

Churchill was outraged by the Conservative party’s protectionism policy and on 31st May 1904 he crossed over to the opposition Liberal party. In the 1906 general election, the Conservatives lost half their seats in Parliament and the Liberals came into power.

Churchill, the most famous British Prime Minister, switched parties twice

In the 1922 general election, the Liberals collaborated with the Labour party and the Conservatives came to power. Unhappy about this Liberal-Labour pact, Churchill crossed over to the Conservatives in 1924 and was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Yes, many know Churchill as the British Prime Minister during WWII but not many know about his 1900-1924 political moves. In his 1927 essay, Consistency in Politics, Churchill defended his actions of party-hopping by saying, “The only way a man can remain consistent amid changing circumstances is to change with them while preserving the same dominating purpose.”

Tunku Abdul Rahman a.k.a. Bapa Merdeka is revered by most Malaysians. When one of the founders of Umno, Onn Jaafar, wanted to open Umno to non-Malays, the Tunku was one of those who opposed the idea.

That prompted Onn Jaafar to leave Umno on 26th August 1951 and the Tunku took over as the party leader. Onn Jaafar then set up his own multiracial party, the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP), long before DAP (1965) and Gerakan (1968) came onto the scene. But it did not receive public support. It was probably too early for its time.

The Tunku left Umno in 1988 and died outside Umno

In 1988, when Umno was deregistered and Umno Baru was formed, the Tunku refused to join Umno. Instead he joined Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s Semangat 46 and died outside Umno, just like Tun Hussein Onn who also died outside Umno like his father. In October 1996, Tengku Razaleigh closed down Semangat 46 and returned to Umno together with many of his supporters.

Today, Tengku Razaleigh is contesting the Umno presidency while many of his Semangat 46 contemporaries, who returned to Umno with him, have again left Umno and crossed over to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).

In fact, Mahathir himself crossed over to PAS in 1969, returned to Umno three years later, left Umno again in 2008, returned to Umno soon after that, and left Umno, yet again, on 29th February 2016 to form PPBM. Mahathir’s ‘ratting’ is even worse than Churchill’s.

Mahathir left Umno three times and will one day go back to Umno if Anwar or Kit Siang pushes him too hard

Some friends and family have asked me why I ‘swung over’ to Najib Tun Razak and/or Umno-Barisan Nasional three years ago in 2015 after opposing Umno and Barisan Nasional since 1977. My response to that is: what is wrong with that? You need to know my ‘political history’ to understand my moves. Most people ‘know’ me since 2008, and some since 1998. You need to know me since 1977.

I became political in 1977 four years after moving to Terengganu. My first political encounter was with Abdul Hadi Awang and PAS. At that time Anwar Ibrahim was the President of ABIM and he, too, served the PAS cause.

Five years later, in 1982, Anwar crossed over to Umno and we felt betrayed. For eight years he had been condemning Umno and called them kafir (infidels) and now he had joined these same infidels. As far as we were concerned Anwar was dead to us.

It cost Anwar RM500 million to oust Ghafar but when Anwar made his move on Mahathir even money could not help him

That same year, some ABIM activists approached us and asked for our support. Anwar was going to contest the Umno Youth leadership and he needed ‘soldiers’. The Deputy President of PAS, Ustaz Fadzil Muhammad Noor, felt that we should support Anwar but not Umno. This is personal-to-holder and not to the party.

We stayed ‘loyal’ to Anwar for about ten years until 1993 when he challenged Tun Ghafar Baba for the Umno Deputy Presidency. We were upset not so much because Anwar tak sabar to take over as the Deputy Prime Minister but because of the RM500 million that he spent to oust Ghafar. In Sabah alone, Anwar spent RM200 million, all in hard cash.

Vincent Tan gave Anwar RM500 million to oust Ghafar Baba, said Nalla

We felt Anwar had lost his way. The funds from Vincent Tan came from Sports Toto. So what ‘Islamic cause’ is Anwar taking about? We decided to wash our hands of Anwar and leave him to his own devices. Anwar was a munafiq (hypocrite) of the highest degree who talks about Islam but does Satan’s work.

Five years later Anwar tried to do to Mahathir what he did to Ghafar…but failed. It was a glorious day to see Anwar’s downfall and we clapped and cheered from the side-lines. Seven months later, Anwar formed a new party, Parti Keadilan Nasional (keADILan), and we saw that as a good vehicle for PAS to ride on to oppose Umno and Barisan Nasional.

If PAS could use Anwar and keADILan then maybe Umno and Barisan Nasional could be ousted. And when Barisan Alternatif — consisting of PAS, keADILan, DAP and PRM — was formed, we went all out to support it.

Anwar also tried to oust Mahathir five years later but this time failed

But Barisan Alternatif lasted only two years. DAP pulled out two years later because Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh had lost their Parliament seats. The Chinese were not happy with PAS and had punished Kit Siang and Karpal for DAP’s deal with PAS. That was when we knew the Chinese will always be the enemy of Islam and we should be very careful with DAP.

PAS was more important than Barisan Alternatif — or even Pakatan Rakyat ten years later — because they have proven to be a friend of the monarchy and very loyal to the Raja-raja Melayu. When Mahathir and Anwar started attacking the monarchy in the mid-1980s, it was PAS that stood behind the Raja-raja Melayu.

Mahathir and Anwar wanted to turn Malaysia into a republic but PAS wanted to retain the Constitutional Monarchy. And DAP was anti-monarchy as well, as was PRM, PSM, etc. So we will follow PAS and will work with whoever PAS works with. In 1999, when PAS worked with Barisan Alternatif, we worked with Barisan Alternatif. In 2008, when PAS worked with Pakatan Rakyat, we worked with Pakatan Rakyat. And in 2014 when PAS did not work with DAP and PKR we also did not work with DAP and PKR.

DAP and PKR started attacking PAS in 2014 because they did not want Azmin Ali as the Selangor Menteri Besar

DAP and PKR started attacking PAS in 2014 because they did not want Azmin Ali as the Selangor Menteri Besar while PAS did. And PAS supported Azmin as the Selangor Menteri Besar because that was what HRH the Selangor Sultan wanted. So, it was basically PAS is with the Sultan, so we are with PAS.

When DAP and PKR teamed up with Mahathir to attack Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak a few months later, we supported Najib. Najib is pro-monarchy while Mahathir, Anwar, DAP and PKR are not. So, our allies are Najib and PAS while our adversaries are Mahathir, Anwar and DAP.

That is politics and that is how it works. Did America and Britain care how many million Russians Stalin killed? They only cared that Stalin, like them, was also anti-Hitler. Did America and Britain care about how many Kurds Saddam Hussein killed? They only cared that Saddam was anti-Iran just like them.

The Pakatan Harapan supporters are greenhorns and too naïve about how the political game is played. Who cares about Pakatan? Who cares about Barisan? What matters is you must defeat your enemy and work with whoever you can to defeat these enemies. And today my enemy is the anti-Raja-raja Melayu crowd who want to turn Malaysia into a Republic.
