Putrajaya says no evidence that Zahid has RM230 million in assets

Minister Liew Vui Keong says MACC will look into the matter.

(FMT) – The government today said it had no evidence that opposition leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has RM230 million in assets.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong said however that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) would look into the matter.

“There is no statement or evidence to support the existence of the cash,” he said in a brief statement.

He was replying to Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) who asked if the government would investigate the allegations that Zahid has RM230 million in assets.

Allegations on Zahid’s wealth surfaced last August when he became involved in a public spat with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathir, who is now the prime minister, accused Zahid of making an asset declaration in 1996 which amounted to nine figures. Mahathir was Umno president at the time while Zahid was Umno Youth chief.

Zahid however accused Mahathir of lying and said the MACC was free to investigate him.

He also asked MACC to investigate Mahathir’s children for their source of wealth.
