Plans to abolish tolls postponed indefinitely

(The Sun Daily) – Tolls nationwide will not be abolished in the foreseeable future as the government does not have the financial means to absorb its impact.

Works Minister Baru Bian (pix) said considering it would cost the government RM400 billion to abolish the tolls in one go, Pakatan Harapan (PH) has decided to put on hold indefinitely any such plans until the country’s financial situation improves.

“After taking into account this factor (of having to fork out RM400 billion), the government has agreed to postpone the proposal to abolish tolls until our economy really stabilises and allows for it.

“The government will, however, study other options that we may deem to be more practical in order to reduce the cost of living for the rakyat,” he told the Dewan Rakyat, here, today.

PH had in its election manifesto pledged to abolish the collection of tolls and Goods and Services Tax (GST). While the tax abolition has been passed in the Dewan Rakyat last week, efforts to forego toll collection have yet to take place.
