Termination of MMC-Gamuda MRT2 contract a Cabinet decision, says Guan Eng

(The Star) – The termination of MMC-Gamuda’s contract to build the underground portion of the MRT Line 2 (MRT2) was a decision made by the Cabinet, says Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic).

“It is a Cabinet decision, and if there are any changes, it must be decided by the Cabinet.

“I will comment after the next Cabinet meeting,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday (Oct 17) when asked about the controversial termination of the contract.

Lim said he was not present in the last Cabinet meeting as he was in Bali, Indonesia on a working visit and was therefore unable to comment.

He said he would be making a statement after the next meeting.

On Oct 7, Lim said Cabinet had decided to terminate the MMC-Gamuda contract to build the underground portion of the MRT2 project, adding that all unfinished underground work would be re-tendered via an open tender process.

However, following protests from Gamuda that the decision would result in job losses affecting about 20,000 workers, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Oct 9 that the government would reconsider the decision.
