Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq expresses support for ‘crooked bridge’
(The Star) – The “crooked bridge” project that is being considered by the Johor state government has found another supporter in Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pic).
The Youth and Sports Minister, who is also Muar MP, expressed his support for the project which was first mooted by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his first tenure as prime minister.
“I support the Prime Minister’s decision. I look forward to discussing it in the Cabinet,” said Syed Saddiq at a press conference here after meeting the participants of the 45th Ship for South-East Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP 2018) on Wednesday (Oct 17).
On Tuesday (Oct 16), Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian said Dr Mahathir had expressed his keenness to revisit the idea of the crooked bridge project, which links Johor to Singapore.
Osman said the Johor government is meeting with the Singapore government at the end of this month to discuss several issues, including water price, bilateral development, investments as well as the crooked bridge project.
The meeting is to be held either on Oct 27 or Oct 28 in Singapore and will be attended by Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
The crooked bridge project proposed by Dr Mahathir was to involve a six-lane S-shaped highway that allows vessels to pass under it, since Singapore refused to demolish its half of the causeway link between the two countries.
The project, however, was dropped by Dr Mahathir’s successor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after the latter came into power.
