Umno’s arrogance caused its election defeat on 9 May 2018
Barisan Nasional’s future lay in the hands of PAS. And many within Najib’s circle did not like that. They hated to admit that Umno was more or less finished and the only way it can stay alive would be with the help of PAS.
THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
Raja Petra Kamarudin
Many have kept asking how I could co-operate with Tun Mahathir when in the past, for the best part of my 53 years in politics, we had been at loggerheads – for instance, with me in the Opposition while Mahathir was the fourth Prime Minister for 22 years from 1981 to 2003. I was even detained for 18 months with Guan Eng under the Internal Security Act during Operation Lalang from October 1987 to April 1989.
Pollster Merdeka Centre estimated that 95% of the Chinese voted for Pakatan Harapan while 35-40% of Malays voted Barisan Nasional, another 30-33% supported PAS, and the remaining 25-30% picked Pakatan Harapan. For Indian voters, 70-75% of them supported Pakatan Harapan.
Did the 95% of the Chinese voted for a Chinese Malaysia when they voted for Pakatan Harapan so they could bully or dominate other races in the country?
Of course not. They voted for a Malaysia where all Malaysians, whether Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans or Orang Aslis, could have a better quality of life, human dignity, freedom, democracy and good governance where there is no corruption and abuses of power and a Malaysia which is admired and respected by the world. (Lim Kit Siang speaking at the Kelantan DAP Hari Raya Open House at Kota Bharu on 9th July 2018)

What Lim Kit Siang told the DAP members in Kelantan more than three months ago is very different from what ‘Superman’ Hew Kuan Yau told the Chinese, which you can see in the video below.

Basically, DAP was using Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to oust Umno and Barisan Nasional and, of course, Mahathir knows this. Mahathir, on the other hand, knows he needed Pakatan Harapan to help oust Umno and Barisan Nasional (to be able to oust Najib Tun Razak) because PPBM on its own could not do that.
More than 95% of the Chinese and 75% of the Indians would have voted Pakatan Harapan anyway, with or without Mahathir. But that would never have been enough to oust Umno and Barisan Nasional. They needed to also reduce Umno’s votes down to less than one-third for Pakatan Harapan to win GE14.
Mahathir can reduce Umno’s votes down to one-third as long as PAS takes away another one-third. In other words, the Malay votes would be divided into three.
However, if Umno makes a deal with PAS and they come out with an electoral pact, then Pakatan Harapan will not win the 9th May 2018 general election.
An electoral pact with PAS would have saved Umno but Najib’s boys sabotaged it
For this plan to work, Umno and PAS have to agree that in some seats there will be straight fights while in some seats three-corner fights. There cannot be straight fights or three-corner fights in ALL the seats because then Pakatan Harapan will win.
Najib agreed to the principle of the matter but then he made one huge mistake. Instead of giving this task to his Boffin Boys who would know best how to manage the negotiations, he handed the task to his PMO boys instead.
The PMO boys were supposed to sit down with PAS to work out the details of where the straight fights should be and where there will be three-corner fights. They reported to Najib that the negotiations were going well and the deal with PAS is solid.
However, not a single meeting was held. Najib was fed a pack of lies. Based on the plan, Barisan Nasional would be able to win at least 130 or so parliament seats. Without the electoral pact with PAS, then Barisan Nasional will struggle to win even 80 seats.
They sabotaged the Umno-PAS electoral pact because they thought Umno could win Kelantan and retain Terengganu
Barisan Nasional’s future lay in the hands of PAS. And many within Najib’s circle did not like that. They hated to admit that Umno was more or less finished and the only way it can stay alive would be with the help of PAS.
So, the PMO boys sabotaged the electoral pact with PAS. They felt they could still make it because they felt they can take all the PAS seats. They even felt they could take Kelantan and retain Terengganu.
It was sheer arrogance and Umno paid for it dearly. It was not until after 9th May 2018 that Najib discovered the truth, which was his own boys in the PMO had caused his downfall. His Boffin Boys were outraged. Of course, Najib’s boys in the PMO were jealous of the Boffin Boys and there was a constant state of turf war, just like what is happening today in PKR.
Najib’s problem is he is too trusting and he allows very crucial matters to be handled by his boys. Take 1MDB, Tabung Haji, Felda, and so on, as examples. His trusted boys mess things up and Najib ends up in court. The GE14 on 9th May 2018 is yet another example. Barisan Nasional could have won that general election but instead lost because of the arrogance of the people in the PMO and now Najib is being made to pay for that too.
