Anwar, on the other hand, was charged, convicted and sentenced for FOUR charges of corruption. Yes, FOUR charges of corruption. Anwar had abused his power and authority to cover up his many crimes of sodomy. So, Anwar’s four charges of corruption relates to the 11 sodomy crimes that the police were investigating.

Mandela was charged for treason and he confessed to his crime based on his principle of opposing apartheid
Some readers have pointed out that Anwar Ibrahim is not the first ex-convict who is going to be prime minister and that Nelson Mandela before this was also an ex-convict who became South Africa’s prime minister.
First of all, Mandela was NOT the Prime Minister of South Africa. Hence that will still make Anwar the FIRST ex-convict to become prime minister. (READ HERE: Malaysia first country in the world to get ex-convict for PM)
Secondly, Mandela was arrested and tried for opposing apartheid and white rule. Anwar did not oppose British rule or white rule. So, Anwar’s crime was not fighting for the freedom of the Malays from white rule like Mandela’s crime was fighting for the freedom of Africans from white rule.

Thirdly, Mandela was tried for treason while Anwar was tried for FOUR counts of corruption.
Mandela actually confessed to his crime and used his trial to spread his message of freedom in his famous three-hour speech, “I am prepared to die”. Mandela’s trial and his speech got global coverage so Mandela’s strategy of using his trial to further his political cause instead of fighting against the charge worked.
Mandela’s action of admitting his crime instead of denying it and fighting the charge meant he would undoubtedly face the death sentence, hence his speech, “I am prepared to die”.
The judge found him guilty but refused to sentence Mandela to death and instead condemned him to a life sentence. While in jail on Robben Island, Mandela was treated as a political prisoner and was isolated from the other non-political prisoners. So even the government did not regard Mandela as a ‘real’ convict.

Twenty-seven years later, President F. W. de Klerk, who believed that apartheid was unsustainable, released a number of ANC prisoners. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, de Klerk called his cabinet together to debate legalising the ANC and freeing Mandela. In December, de Klerk met Mandela to negotiate his unconditional release.
For all intents and purposes, Mandela was considered a political prisoner and de Klerk treated him as one. The irony of the whole thing is de Klerk was trying to force Mandela to get out of jail while Mandela, on the other hand, was trying to delay his release. Mandela refused to get out of jail unless his terms were met. In other words, Mandela would have stayed in jail had the terms not been met.

Mahathir has to do the right thing and never allow an ex-convict to become Malaysia’s prime minister
Anwar was eventually tried for just one of those 11 crimes of sodomy because that was enough since he received nine years jail for it to make it a total of 15 years jail. The Prime Minister told the police to drop the other ten cases because even the first sodomy trial hurt the government very badly and another ten sodomy trials would have been condemned by the entire world.
Many think the world condemned Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad because they viewed Anwar’s trial as politically motivated. The truth is the world no longer considers sodomy a crime, not even the church even though the Bible may be against sodomy. In fact, Christians no longer care what the Bible says and that is why they are supportive of sodomy and LGBTs.
