Former AG Apandi may be charged in court, says Hanipa

(FMT) – Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hanipa Maidin today hinted that former attorney-general (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali may be charged in court.

“We (lawyers) often asked if the AG would be charged, but I feel now it is possible.

“He may be charged,” Hanipa said in the Dewan Rakyat, adding however that political will would be needed to do so.

Apandi was appointed as AG on July 27, 2015. He replaced Abdul Gani Patail, who was reportedly removed due to health reasons.

In 2016, he cleared former prime minister Najib Razak of any wrongdoing in the 1MDB affair.

In June this year, Istana Negara Comptroller Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V had consented to Apandi’s termination of service as AG by the federal government.

He said Sultan Muhammad V had given his consent to the appointment of Tommy Thomas as the new AG in accordance with Article 145 (1) of the Federal Constitution.

Apandi was formerly a judge of the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court.

However, after coming to power in the May 9 polls, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Apandi might have undermined his own credibility by hiding evidence in the 1MDB case.
