GERAKAN HAS JUST COMMITED HARAKIRI

For more than 10 years Gerakan has been discussing internally about leaving Barisan Nasional. However, Gerakan was worried that if they left the ruling coalition they would be out of power. Ultimately Gerakan still wanted to be in the corridors of power and that was why for 10 years Gerakan just talked about it but did not dare leave Barisan Nasional.
It took Barisan Nasional’s defeat in GE14 to finally prompt Gerakan to leave the coalition. If not, Gerakan would probably have remained in Barisan Nasional whereby Gerakan would be a mere passenger and not even a co-driver any longer. So Gerakan had no choice but to leave Barisan Nasional in shame.
Gerakan now has the option to reinvent itself into a true multiracial party since it is no longer tied to UMNO or Barisan Nasional. However, instead of displaying a multiracial culture, Gerakan has taken up the ICERD issue by starting a pro-ICERD petition, thereby trying to show the Chinese it is more Chinese than DAP. Even DAP has the common sense to back down from the ICERD issue whereas Gerakan ventures into territory where even angels fear to tread.
