Who’s the next Agong?
But never mind all that. What we need to talk about is why is Anwar interfering in this matter and what does he hope to achieve by pushing for the Sultan of Johor to take over as Agong? Does this have anything to do with Anwar taking over the job of Prime Minister from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad?
THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
Raja Petra Kamarudin
I am not going to talk about why His Highness Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan stepped down as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong and why it happened today (or before the 9th January). I am still a Royalist or Monarchist at heart so let us just leave it at that.
In the meantime, His Highness the Sultan of Perak will continue as the Acting Agong until the Conference of Rulers decides on the new or 16th Agong.
The question we need to focus on now is not why Sultan Muhammad resigned as Agong, but who will be taking over as the next Agong.
Anwar Ibrahim is pushing for the Sultan of Johor to take over. His Majesty, however, is not keen on the job because he would rather be ‘free’ to do his own thing. So Anwar is trying to pujuk or ‘slow talk’ His Majesty to take the post of Agong.
