What’s with Puteri Umno
Raja Sara Petra
GE14, and the two general elections before that, saw a decline in the support of the youth and urban voters for Umno and Barisan Nasional. Umno Youth and Puteri Umno, who were supposed to have captured the votes to this group, faced an uphill battle because Pakatan Harapan very cleverly used the social media to play the game of perception.
Acknowledging this is the weakness of Umno and Barisan Nasional over the last 20 years since 1999, Puteri Umno needs to change the way it plays politics and become more internet and social media savvy if it does not want to go extinct.
I feel I am able to contribute in this effort and help Puteri Umno compete in the politik baru of Malaysia Baru where perception is everything and decides the outcome of the general election and I would like to be part of this team to contribute for a change that umno needs.
Initially I thought I could do this through Gerakan, which talked about becoming a third force and of reinventing itself. However, Gerakan appears too focused on Chinese politics and is more interested in competing with DAP than in capturing the hearts and minds of the youth and urbanites.
I have discussed this matter with the Puteri Umno leadership and they appear receptive to fresh ideas. So I would like to try my hand at assisting Puteri Umno in the next general election, which is going to become tougher with the way Pakatan Harapan is using fake news and false perception as it modus operandi.
