GPS named as third leg of ‘unholy’ Umno-PAS alliance
(FMT) – Sarawak Pakatan Harapan has labelled the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak as the third leg of the Umno-PAS “unholy union” and vowed to bring down the party at the next state general election.
Sarawak PH chairman Chong Chieng Jen said GPS must be defeated in order for reforms to be carried out in the state.
Speaking at a Sarawak PH dinner here, he said the next state elections, due by 2021, would be “the battle of the century”, and would be a government-to-government fight between the federal and state governments.
“The unholy union between Umno and PAS poses a big threat to the Pakatan Harapan government and there is a third party hiding behind this unholy union of Umno and PAS – that is Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), which is part of the GPS coalition.”
He said GPS leaders had conspired with Umno and PAS leaders, resulting in the defeat of a constitutional amendment bill to restore the status of Sabah and Sarawak (as equal partners with Malaya in forming Malaysia).
He said GPS had been promoting the local party sentiment among Sarawakians but for Sarawak to be reformed, the state government must work with the federal government.
“You can’t bring changes if the state government is always going against the federal government. It would only benefit the elite in the state government and not the people,” he said.
He accused the state government of oppressing the rakyat, and urged the people not to forget the erosion of Sarawakians’ rights to their lands.
“The changes that we promised may not happen immediately but they are surely to come,” he said. “I also believe that the “big fish” in Sarawak would be brought to justice in the next few months.”
