Umno no longer the opposition in Kelantan

Only one opposition seat left in the Kelantan State Assembly

(FMT) – State opposition leader Alwi Che Ahmad from Barisan Nasional (BN) quit his post today, citing the Umno-PAS charter signed by the two parties last month.

The Kok Lanas assemblyman announced his resignation when debating the state’s 2020 Budget at the state assembly today.

“The first thing I would like to mention here is, starting today, after the national consensus (political cooperation between Umno and PAS), Kelantan no longer has an opposition leader as I’m quitting the post.

“All of us are now the supporters of the (state) government,” he said.

Alwi said the decision was reached at the Umno Supreme Council and political bureau meetings.

PAS and Umno signed the National Consensus Charter on Sept 14.

Today’s decision means the opposition is represented by its sole assemblyman from Pakatan Harapan, Mustapa Mohamed (PH-Ayer Lanas).

“He is the only opposition (assemblyman). It is up to the speaker to decide on the seating rearrangement,” he said.
