Anwar thanks Dr M for pledging to step down before GE15

(FMT) – Prime Minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim has thanked Dr Mahathir Mohamad for pledging to step down as prime minister before the next general election.

Anwar, who is PKR president, told reporters at Parliament lobby: “Thank you to the rakyat, to Pakatan Harapan and to Tun (Mahathir).”

Recently, Mahathir had given his assurance that he would step down before the 15th general election, although he did not give a specific date.

“I cannot say whether it is two years or three years, but I will certainly step down as I promised,” Mahathir said.

On a related matter, Anwar again dismissed talk about various parties allegedly conspiring against this transition in power, saying that the decision had been made well before the 14th general election.

“I have explained that I am sincere. Actually, I am already too lazy to respond (to them).

“The decision had been made before the elections. The mandate was given during the last elections. So far, there are no PH leaders who have proposed anybody else (to become the next prime minister).

“But this is a question of politics. It is called ‘court intrigue’; it happens and we cannot avoid it. But I have no issue. We just focus on governing.”
