MACC to reopen old or closed cases

(FMT) The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is looking into re-opening “old cases” which may have been closed due to the involvement of influential people, its chief said.

Latheefa Koya said she was aware of calls to re-open previous probes including those linked to Sarawak and the 2009 death of DAP officer Teo Beng Hock.

“So many files. Some of them, I have been informed, were closed.

“I am not sure why a file is closed when they tell me there is still a case,” she told reporters at a function organised by Transparency International Malaysia and Malaysian Reform Initiative (MARI).

Latheefa said she has received memorandums to re-open previously closed investigations, adding that the cases could be linked to “people who may have been very influential”.

She said some of these cases were as recent as last year, but refused to give details.

She said re-looking into the cases would mean knowing the reasons why they were closed.

Latheefa refused to give details on re-opening of old cases, saying revealing them could cause the files to “go missing”.

She also refused to comment if she thought there were improprieties in past decisions to close investigations.
