PPBM, Umno, PAS join forces to form Perak govt

Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu today said PPBM, Umno and PAS have agreed to join forces to form a new state government, the second state to do so after Johor.

(FMT) – Faizal said the new coalition would comprise four PPBM assemblymen including himself, all of Umno’s 25 elected representatives and three from PAS.

He also said that two assemblymen – PKR’s Abdul Yunus Jamhari (Kuala Kurau) and Barisan Nasional’s Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi (Tualang Sekah) – had joined PPBM.

“Now we can form a new government with a majority of 32 assemblymen. With the new coalition, we hope to form a stable state government and work closely with the Perikatan Nasional federal government,” he said at a press conference in Ipoh.

There are 59 state seats in Perak.

Also present at the press conference were Perak Umno chairman Saarani Mohamad, Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria and former menteri besar Zambry Abdul Kadir.

However, Faizal was coy over whether he would remain as MB, saying he remains at the helm of the state for now.

“Today, I am still the Perak menteri besar and the three parties have agreed to hand the names of nominees as proposed by their respective parties to the Perak sultan.”

When asked why a new government had been formed with PAS and Umno, he said it was in line with his party’s central leadership to form Perikatan Nasional.

He added that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration he had led had not been stable.

On accusations that he had betrayed the voters in Perak, Faizal said: “We should not forget that there were some of my exco members then who were busy trying to topple the MB and their own coalition.

“The treachery started there,” he said, adding that the new government would be able to serve the people better.

On Feb 27, the Johor chapters of PPBM and Umno joined forces to form the state government after obtaining a simple majority in the state assembly.

This came after PPBM pulled out from PH, effectively collapsing the government and plunging the nation into a political crisis that culminated in Muhyiddin Yassin being named prime minister.
