I want Dr M to endorse my government, says Muhyiddin
(FMT) – Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today said he wants his predecessor, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to endorse his administration.
At a press conference after chairing the new government’s first Cabinet meeting, Muhyiddin revealed the contents of a letter he had sent to Mahathir.
He said he had apologised if the events of the past week had hurt Mahathir, and said that he wanted to meet with the veteran statesman.
“I am ready to meet Tun (Mahathir) anytime, anywhere,” he added. “I want Tun to endorse the government. It is legal.”
Now, he said, the people were hoping that the government would deliver.
“We are here to serve the people.”
Adding that his Cabinet and government are constitutional, he thanked Mahathir for stating that his Cabinet would last until the next general election.
“Thank you, Tun. Thank you for the comments,” he said in an apparent reference to Mahathir’s interview with Sinar Harian.
Mahathir had told the Malay daily that Muhyiddin’s administration would be able to last until the 15th general election, and that it had the power of incumbency to attract more support.
Muhyiddin added that his government was willing to work hard and enhance public confidence in its administration.
“We have promised and we will deliver,” he said.
Perikatan Nasional launches Covid-19 fund
Muhyiddin said his administration has decided to set up a special fund to help Malaysians affected by Covid-19.
He said Putrajaya is to inject RM1 million for the fund, and urged the rakyat to contribute as the proceeds will be used to assist those placed under quarantine or financially affected by the coronavirus infection.
“It is to help people who are infected by the virus, so that their livelihood won’t be compromised.
“We will give financial assistance to those who have lost their jobs, or have had their income affected after being placed under quarantine,” he said, adding that it was a form of humanitarian assistance.
When Pakatan Harapan came into power in May 2018, they had launched the Pakatan Harapan fund to assist the government to repay some of the debts accumulated during BN’s era.
