Covid-19 transmission in Sarawak has stabilised thanks to MCO, says CM

(FMT) – Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said the Covid-19 transmission trend in the state has been “stabilised” following the movement control order (MCO) on March 18.

“Therefore, I appeal to all Sarawakians to continue to abide by the MCO and stay at home,” he said at a press conference at his office here today.

He said if the people abided strictly by the MCO, there would be a good possibility that the state could contain the Covid-19, especially as it was separated from the peninsula by the South China Sea.

“If we keep indoors and abide by the MCO, there is a possibility for the number of cases to come down and hopefully, in 16 to 17 days, there will be zero (cases),” he added.

As of yesterday, Sarawak had recorded 91 positive Covid-19 cases and five deaths since March 17.

He said the state government would more strictly monitor human traffic at the borders with neighbouring countries to prevent the “import” of Covid-19 cases.

Meanwhile, he said two sub-committees had been formed during the state security meeting earlier today, namely the food supply chain sub-committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and the security committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister James Jemut Masing.
