Takiyuddin maintains Parliament to sit for a day only despite reopening of economy

(Malaysiakini) – De facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan maintained that Parliament will only sit for a day despite the reopening of the country’s economy as the Covid-19 situations improve.

Takiyuddin (photo) said the government had already taken into account the views of the Pakatan Harapan presidential council, which had been up in arms over what they claim to be an attempt to stymie the legislature’s check and balance role.

“Considering the government’s position that it is still unsuitable to have any form of gathering to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection, it is appropriate to maintain the one-day Parliament sitting scheduled on May 18,” he said in a statement.

On Friday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the economy will reopen on Monday, ahead of the expiry of the movement control order (MCO) on May 12.

Restaurants will again be allowed to serve dine-in customers while recreational activities may also proceed but with social distancing measures. However, gatherings are still not allowed.

Takiyuddin said the sitting position during the one-day session will be adjusted to ensure social distancing.

“This is to ensure all MPs can participate (in the debate) within the framework of the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the Health Ministry,” he said.

He said the government plans to introduce several legislations related to managing the Covid-19 pandemic in a separate Parliament sitting.

“Considering the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on individuals, business people and companies, the government has agreed to table a number of Bills in July,” he said.
