Johor ruler threatens to dissolve state assembly

Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar today threatened to dissolve the state legislative assembly to make way for snap polls, saying he is fed up with “selfish” politicians in the state who continue to “jostle for power”.

(FMT) – “I have taken an oath to protect and defend my state and subjects at all times.

“If there is anymore jostling for power among elected representatives, I will immediately dissolve the Johor state assembly,” the vocal monarch said in a statement posted on Facebook.

This comes some three months after the state administration changed hands, just before Perikatan Nasional took over federal power in March.

In February, the Johor chapters of PPBM and Umno joined forces to form the state government with a simple majority following PPBM’s move to leave Pakatan Harapan (PH) which saw the collapse of the ruling coalition.

Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad was subsequently sworn in as the state’s menteri besar.

Sultan Ibrahim’s warning comes in the wake of claims by Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub that a change in government could take place in Johor.

Salahuddin, who is also the Simpang Jeram assemblyman, said this in claiming that PH could wrest Putrajaya back when the Dewan Rakyat sits in July.
