PH replies to Johor Sultan’s threat to dissolve state assembly

(FMT) – Johor Pakatan Harapan has reiterated that the people’s mandate, manifested through the 14th general election, must be returned.

In a statement, Johor PH said this must be done through the proper process and within the confines of the law in accordance with the country’s constitution.

The statement, signed by its component party state chiefs — Amanah’s Aminolhuda Hassan, PKR’s Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and DAP’s Liew Chin Tong — follows the warning from Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar earlier today on the tussle for power in the state.

Sultan Ibrahim had threatened to dissolve the state assembly to make way for snap polls, saying he was fed up with “selfish” politicians in the state who continue to “jostle for power”.

The state administration changed hands just before Perikatan Nasional took over federal power in March.

In February, the Johor chapters of PPBM and Umno joined forces to form the state government with a simple majority following PPBM’s move to leave PH.

Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad was subsequently sworn in as the state’s menteri besar.

The ruler’s warning today came in the wake of claims by Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub that a change in government could take place in Johor.

“Johor PH reiterates our commitment and confidence in the parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, which is the backbone of the state and country,” the Johor PH leaders said.

They added Johor PH will hold firm to its principles in any situation, including facing the current political situation.
