The Agong needs to do nothing

From the tone of the Istana Negara press statement, it seems to be saying that His Majesty need not do anything and will do nothing while Anwar has been told to drop the coup against Muhyiddin and the attempt to form a backdoor government.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

What an anti-climax. As Shakespeare would say, much ado about nothing. Anwar Ibrahim’s audience with His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong turned out to be a mere storm in a teacup.

This press statement by Istana Negara has closed the door on Anwar’s “I have the numbers” drama

Basically, His Majesty the Agong sent Anwar away and told him to go play in the corner. This was the same treatment Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad received when he had an audience with His Majesty the Agong — Almu’tasimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah — in Alor Setar five years ago.

To dispel the misconception that it was a “mission accomplished”, Istana Negara quickly came out with a press statement that said His Majesty advised Anwar to respect the process of the law as stipulated in the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

Istana Negara’s press statement also said Anwar told His Majesty that more than 120 MPs support him but he did not show His Majesty the list of names. This contradicts Anwar’s claim that he had presented “genuine documents” to the Agong to prove he has the majority to form the government.

This is not the face of victory

In his press conference later, Anwar claimed he has more than 120 MPs with him to form the next government and that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will need time to digest and verify the numbers. The question of timing will be at the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and this process cannot be rushed, said Anwar.

Anwar also boasted that Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional government has fallen and that he has extended an olive branch to Muhyiddin but thus far there has been no response from the Prime Minister.
