If you cannot speak Bahasa Malaysia properly, get out

It is crucial that Malaysia enforces a “Bahasa Malaysia Oral Test” and “Life in Malaysia Written Test” before a person can contest the state and general elections. If it is good enough for the UK, then it is good enough for Malaysia. After all, isn’t Malaysia’s Westminster system of Parliament and Constitutional Monarchy modelled after UK’s?

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Not a single British politician cannot speak proper English. The same goes for China (they all speak proper Chinese), Italy (they all speak proper Italian), Germany (they all speak proper German), France (they all speak proper French), and so on and so forth for every country in the world.

Well, almost every country in the world. There is one country where many of the politicians (even the elected officials such as Wakil Rakyat) CANNOT speak the national language properly. And that country is Malaysia.

Malaysia has more than 800 Wakil Rakyat at state and federal level (MPs and ADUNs). The UK, at double Malaysia’s population, has only 650 Wakil Rakyat or MPs. But then all 650 British Wakil Rakyat speak English while not all the 800+ Malaysian Wakil Rakyat can communicate in proper Bahasa Malaysia.

You are not welcome in the UK unless you pass these tests and can speak proper English

The UK is very strict about granting you a PR status or citizenship. You first need to go for a test to see if you can speak English properly and whether you have enough understanding and knowledge regarding Britain, its history, and life in Britain in general (its laws included).

If you cannot speak English properly or you have little understanding of Britain, its laws, history, culture, traditions, etc., then you will never be allowed to live in England. And that means you will also never be allowed to contest the general election and become a British Wakil Rakyat in a million years.

It is pathetic that many Malaysian politicians — even amongst the more than 800 Wakil Rakyat (and even those who were born in Malaysia and are NOT immigrants) — cannot speak Bahasa Malaysia properly. (Does it surprise you to know there are still some Chinese and Indians who cannot speak Bahasa Malaysia at all?)

And even amongst those who can speak “bazaar” Bahasa Malaysia, many do not understand the local culture, customs, traditions, history, etc. In England, even if you can speak proper English but do not understand the local culture, customs, traditions, history, and so on, you will never be allowed to live in the UK.

These people will never be welcome in the UK or in the UK Parliament

Let that be the first REFORM that Pakatan Harapan proposes in Parliament, since they talk so much about reforming the country. We can no longer tolerate Wakil Rakyat who cannot even speak the country’s language properly. The fact that they even have Malaysian citizenship is shameful. And Malaysia is the only country in the world where this can happen.
