Covid-19: Highest daily number of cases as MCO kicks in at midnight


(The New Sarawak) – Another record number of infections were reported today with 3,309 cases being registered over the last 24 hours.

The Health Ministry said the total number of infections now stands at 141,533, with 30,390 of them being active cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 190 patients are in the ICU with 83 on respirators.

There were four deaths bringing the number of fatalities to 559.

Selangor had the highest number of cases with 1,007 cases, followed by Johor (442), Sabah (409), Penang (317) and Perak (241).

Sarawak recorded 146 cases today.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said 92 cases were detected in Sibu, Sebauh (20), Kanowit (12), Miri (11), Beluru (3), Kuching (3), Dalat (2) and one each in Saratok, Bintulu and Limbang.

A total of 83 cases in Sibu were linked to the Pasai Cluster.

Meanwhile, the 20 cases were detected in Sebauh are linked to a new cluster, identified as Bukit Sekubong.

SDMC also announced that Chinese New Year celebrations will be allowed in Sarawak but restricted to a maximum of 20 people comprising close family members.

It said the celebrations could only be held on the first day of the festival, which falls on Feb 12.

SDMC also said that only the food and beverage section of cinemas in the state are allowed to operate while the cinemas will remain closed.

To date, Sarawak has reported a total of 1,574 cases, including 19 deaths.
