No Malay support, no political power

Anyway, now Umno is back as head of the government. The Chinese-led Pakatan Harapan ousted Muhyiddin Yassin just to allow Umno to come back as the top dog. To the Malays, whether Umno, PPBM or PAS heads the new government really does not matter, so long as it is a Malay heading a Malay government.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Looking at developments over the last six years since 2015, only the delusional will not believe you can never gain political power without Malay support.

Najib Tun Razak and the Umno-Barisan Nasional government fell in May 2018 because the Malays deserted them. Anwar Ibrahim is trying to become PM9 on the back of Malay support. Without Malay support, Anwar cannot become PM.

Anwar talks about civil liberties, democracy, good governance, democracy, human rights, and all forms of “Western values”. He shies away from talking about Malay privileges, Article 153, Islam and the Sharia, a single language or Bahasa Malaysia education system, and all forms of “Malay values”.

Hence Anwar is popular with the non-Malays, but the Malays do not trust him. Hence, also, Anwar cannot become prime minister or PM9 since you need Malay support for that to happen.

The May 2018 general election or GE14 was the exception, not the rule. Najib Tun Razak’s people did not handle the media war effectively. Pakatan Harapan managed to convince Malaysians that Najib is a crook who stole RM100 billion of the taxpayers’ money. Hence Najib needed to be removed and the only way to do that was to oust Umno and Barisan Nasional.

The May 2018 general election was basically a coup against Najib Tun Razak. If Najib had done what Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad did in 2003 (which was to resign and hand power to somebody else just before the general election) Umno-BN would not have lost the general election.

Another major blunder was, after agreeing to an electoral pact with PAS to face GE14, at the eleventh hour, Umno betrayed PAS and went for three-corner or more contests. That cost Umno-BN the election.
