1MDB’s debts guaranteed by the govt, Muhyiddin reminds Najib

When 1MDB failed to pay its debts, it was the government that had to step in, says Muhyiddin.

(Malaysia Now) – Muhyiddin Yassin today continued to question Najib Razak’s claim in the Dewan Rakyat last week that the people’s money was not used to pay 1MDB’s debt, asking how Najib as the former prime minister and finance minister could forget that the sovereign fund’s debts were guaranteed by the government.

“When 1MDB failed to pay its debts including interest totalling more than RM50 billion in all, it was the government that had to pay these debts,” he said in his debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He referred to the statement by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz on March 3, that 1MDB’s outstanding debts as of February this year stood at RM38.8 billion.

“The finance minister in January also said that the government had paid RM13.3 billion of 1MDB’s debts so far,” he added.

“This means this is the people’s money. Perhaps what the Pekan MP meant was, because the government had succeeded in recovering some of 1MDB’s money and assets that were stolen, these should be used to pay back 1MDB’s debt.”
