Malaysia doomed if people okay with benefiting from graft, says Loke
The nation will be doomed if Malaysians tolerate corruption just because they benefit from it, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said.
(FMT) – Loke said there had to be a desire by the public as well as a strong political will to curb corrupt practices.
“But if the rakyat feels ‘it’s okay if he is corrupt because I got a share and he helped me’, then this will leave the country in ruins,” he said in an interview that was streamed online.
Separately, Loke, a former transport minister, said top government officers with a lot of assets would naturally be reluctant to declare them.
He said this when commenting on the 15 ministers and deputy ministers who have yet to publicly declare their assets.
This morning DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang claimed six individuals with ministerial rank, such as special envoys to regions, advisers, and the chairman of the National Recovery Council Muhyiddin Yassin, had not done so.
Loke said that those in Pakatan Harapan including members of Parliament had complied with the requirement to declare their assets during the coalition’s 22-month reign.
He said public pressure needed to be exerted on politicians.
