2023 Budget needs to be re-tabled if Parliament is dissolved before bill is passed, says speaker

The 2023 Budget due to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next week may need to be retabled if Parliament is dissolved before the bill is passed in the House.

(NST) – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun said once Parliament was dissolved and a new government was formed, the new federal administration would have to restart the entire process of tabling the budget.

“If the election is held before (the 2023 Budget is passed), there will be the formation of a new government. With a new government, the budget has to retabled for the first reading.

“This is because this (upcoming) budget is not binding on the government,” he told reporters during a media conference at the Parliament building here today.
