GE15: Nik Omar’s move to contest under PKR ticket is a joke, says Pas

He sees his participation in the general election under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner as a way of fulfilling his late father’s dreams to see Anwar become the prime minister.

(NST) – “Its a joke” said Pas in response to a decision by Nik Omar, son of the late Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat to contest under PKR in Perak in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, however, said it was not an issue for Pas.

“This is not a surprise for Pas. As far as Pas is concerned, he (Nik Omar) was previously a member of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

“But he was announced as PKR’s candidate by its president and he will be contesting in certain areas out of Kelantan.

“Whatever the reason given by Nik Omar is just an excuse,” said Takiyuddin after attending the ‘sembang kedai kopi’ programme here last night.

It was reported yesterday that Nik Omar is set to contest under PKR in Perak in the GE15.

Nik Omar, 57, was among the seven candidates from various backgrounds announced by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest under PKR in the election.

A graduate of Al-Azhar University, Egypt in Usuluddin Hadith and a PhD candidate at Pattani University in Thailand, Nik Omar was a former Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia president.

Nik Omar said he did not mind contesting anywhere and he would go as far as Sabah.

He sees his participation in the general election under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner as a way of fulfilling his late father’s dreams to see Anwar become the prime minister.

Nik Omar said his late father, a former Pas spiritual leader, had always voiced such hopes before his death in 2015.

In the 14th General Election, Nik Omar contested in the Chempaka state assembly constituency in Kelantan.

He lost in the three-cornered fight after securing 2,418 votes.
