NHMS Survey: One-Third Of Malaysian Teens Had Sex Before Turning 14


MOH’s NHMS 2022 survey shows that one-third of Malaysian teens had sex before turning 14. Two-thirds of teens aged 13-17 are sexually active. 88% don’t use condoms/ any birth control. 11% have multiple sexual partners. The age of consent for sex is 16.

(CodeBlue) – The latest National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2022 has revealed a disturbing trend, showing that 33 per cent of teenagers in Malaysia had sex before reaching the age of 14.

According to the study by the Institute for Public Health, National Institutes of Health at the Ministry of Health, two-thirds of Malaysian teenagers aged between 13 and 17 years are sexually active, with 75 per cent reported having had sex recently.

Equally concerning is that 88 per cent did not utilise condoms or any form of birth control. This lack of contraceptive use puts them at a heightened risk of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
