We want to strike a balance, says Pas on move to field candidates not from religious field

Pas has decided to strike a balance in its choice of candidates for the upcoming state elections.

(NST) – The Islamic party, which has mostly fielded religious preachers (ustaz) in elections over the past years, will also have candidates with a professional background this time.

Pas vice-president and Deputy Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the matter was decided by the party’s top leadership recently.

“Many have assumed that Pas will field religious preachers as our candidates as we have normally done.

“But this time, we will add in those not from a religious background to contest. The same applies for new candidates,” he said.

Pas hopes the move will attract more confidence in the party, he added.

Amar, who is also Panchor assemblyman, said Pas hoped the move would attract more confidence in the party while shaping a stable future for its administration.

“This will be a new introduction by Pas. We want to make a little bit of change this time.”
