State polls: Perikatan to contest 245 seats, PAS gets lion’s share
(The Star) – Perikatan Nasional will contest 245 seats in the six state elections.
Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the coalition had agreed to allocate 83 seats for Bersatu, PAS (126) and Gerakan (36).
“The seat allocation has been finalised. The announcement of the seat distribution will be done at the state level to prepare our respective machineries,” he said at a press conference at Perikatan’s headquarters here on Thursday (June 22).
Muhyiddin added that the respective component party leaders at the state level will decide on the criteria for the candidates that will contest in the state elections.
He also said that Perikatan would contest 36 seats in Kedah followed by 45 seats in Kelantan, 32 allocated in Terengganu, 40 in Penang, 56 in Selangor and 36 seats in Negri Sembilan.
“The number of new seats with no incumbents contested under Perikatan are 64 seats by Bersatu, Pas 50 seats and Gerakan 36 seats.
“The no incumbent means any seats that belonged to other parties that are not under Perikatan,” he said.
Earlier, Perikatan component parties had a meeting on the distribution of seats for Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu state elections.
The state elections will likely be held in August as the five states have announced dissolution dates – Kelantan on June 22, Selangor on June 23, Kedah and Penang on June 28 and Negri Sembilan on June 30.
Terengganu is expected to announce the dissolution of its legislative assembly soon.
