Cabinet to address Najib’s house arrest bid with transparency, urges Zaid

(Focus Malaysia) – FORMER law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has called on ministers in the federal government to address the issue of former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s house arrest bid, noting the need for transparency and adherence to constitutional principles.

Zaid pointed out recent remarks made by Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Doha, where Anwar suggested that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar should only consider Najib’s house arrest bid after the conclusion of his ongoing 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial.

Anwar stressed that as PM, he would not override the King’s authority and would only offer recommendations if requested by the ruler.

“The saga of house arrest is not a bid by Najib; it came about because the government was not acting on the royal pardon. Najib had to initiate legal action because the government was unwilling to act on the decree.

“The government was hiding this information from the public until the court case,” Zaid claimed.

In a statement today, the former UMNO member warned against covert manoeuvres and stressed the importance of honesty and adherence to constitutional provisions.

Moreover, Zaid and his firm represented Najib during the final stage of his appeal in the SRC International corruption case at the Federal Court in 2022.
