PH lost Alor Star, we want to contest the seat, Umno division says
The Alor Star Umno division has passed a resolution demanding Barisan Nasional (BN) contest the Kedah capital’s parliamentary seat and one state seat in the constituency in the next general election (GE16).
(NST) – All 497 delegates who attended yesterday’s divisional annual general meeting approved the resolution.
The delegates want the party to contest the Alor Star parliamentary seat and either the Suka Menanti or Alor Mengkudu state seat.
For context, the Alor Seat is currently held by Perikatan Nasional after Pas’ Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden won the seat in GE15. Prior to that, PKR held the seat for two terms.
The Suka Menanti and Alor Mengkudu state seats are also held by PN.
In last year’s state polls, PN wrested the seats from PKR and Amanah respectively.
According to the resolution sighted by the New Straits Times, the Umno division wants to contest the seats following Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) failure to defend the seats.
While BN contested against PH for the Alor Star seat in GE15, it made way for PH candidates in the state polls following the formation of the unity government at the federal level.
“It was disappointing for Umno and BN, especially Alor Star Umno (that PH did not retain the seats), as none of the seats were allocated to us.
