Rembia rep given Friday deadline to clarify alleged switch to PAS

Rembia assemblyman Jailani Khamis has been given until this Friday to clarify whether he has indeed joined PAS, says state assembly speaker Ibrahim Durum.

(FMT) – Ibrahim said he gave Jailani a letter requesting clarification during a meeting on July 19.

“However, Jailani did not present any official letter during that meeting,” he told FMT.

“I gave him a two-week deadline from July 19 to submit an explanation. As of today, I have yet to receive a response.”

Ibrahim added that Jailani had not given any answers at the meeting, and had suggested contacting PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan for clarification instead.

“But I told him that it was not my responsibility,” he said, adding that a decision on Jailani’s status could only be made upon receipt of his explanation.

Ibrahim expressed hope that Jailani would respond to the letter by the time he returned from Australia on Aug 8.

On July 16, Takiyuddin announced that Jailani, who was suspended from Umno, had joined the Islamic party in June 2023. He said Jailani had not breached the anti-hopping law since Melaka’s enactment was only passed on July 31 that year.

However, a deputy executive councillor said Jailani had remained seated in the government bloc at state assembly sessions since last year despite purportedly already being a PAS member.
