BN to contest Mahkota by-election

A Barisan Nasional candidate will contest the Mahkota by-election, based on the consensus among parties in the unity government.

(NST) – BN chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was agreed that the candidate for any by-election would come from the incumbent party.

“We will discuss (on the likely candidate).

“I don’t want statements by top or grassroots leaders demanding for the seat,” he said at SME Corp today.

The Election Commission (EC) has fixed Sept 28 for the Mahkota by-election.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said nomination day would be held on Sept 14, while early voting is set for Sept 24.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman, Umno’s Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, on Aug 2.
