Bukit Bendera MP lodges police report against social media users for slander

Bukit Bendera member of parliament, Syerleena Abdul Rashid has lodged a police report against those who have slandered her on social media.

(NST) – In a statement, she said the police reports were for parties who had accused her of supposedly ‘fighting to change Malaysia’s official religion’ and ‘planning to attack Islamic institutions, especially the Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim)’.

“These claims are extreme slander spread by irresponsible parties with the intent to create a negative perception of me, my party, and the government among the public, especially the Malay community.

“In the same post, there is also an individual who falsely claimed that the leader of the Parti Komunis Malaya, Rashid Maidin, is my father, when in fact, my late father, Abdul Rashid Hanafi, was a school teacher who just passed away in early June,” she said.

Syerleena also said that a police report regarding the vandalism of the Bukit Bendera member of parliament service centre signboard had been made and the police are currently investigating the matter.

“Such attacks are extremely irresponsible and must be stopped. They not only tarnish my good name and my family’s reputation but also have the potential to create tension within society.

“As a Muslim member of parliament, I remain committed to upholding the sanctity of Islam and will defend its institutions in this country if they are threatened,” she said adding that the DAP leadership has also emphasised that the party will continue to respect and adhere to the Federal Constitution concerning the position of Islam, the Malay rulers, and the Malay language.

As such, she said, the public, especially Muslims, need not fear DAP, as the party conducts its political activities based on constitutional principles and the laws of the country.

Syerleena also called for the public to use social media responsibly, adding that it is a powerful platform and should be used wisely and ethically.

“Every individual has a role in ensuring that the information disseminated is true and not misleading. Let us all together reject the culture of slander and ensure that every claim made is based on truth and facts.

“The authorities must take swift and firm action against those who spread slander on all platforms.

The dissemination of false or slanderous information not only damages a person’s reputation but also causes confusion and instability in society.

“We must unite in rejecting this culture and ensure that justice and truth are always upheld.”
