Selangor Urimai duo arrested by cops over TikTok video

Two Selangor Urimai leaders have been arrested by police over a TikTok video purportedly criticising two programmes by the Selangor government meant for the Indian community.

Lawyer L Mehnagha said Selangor Urimai chief K Gunasekaran and his deputy, K Sunthrraju, were arrested separately in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, and Klang, Selangor, yesterday.

Mehnagha told FMT police were granted a one-day remand order, and that the pair will be released today.

“They are being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 for improper use of network facilities,” she said.

She also said the investigation followed a police report lodged by Selangor executive council member V Papparaidu.

In the video, the duo had touched on the Selangor government’s Indian Selangor Empowerment and Entrepreneurs Development Programme (iSeed) and Indian Entrepreneur Development Centre (Sitham).

Urimai chairman P Ramasamy criticised the arrests, taking aim at the Selangor government for being unable to tolerate criticism.

“The police should act independently and not under political pressure from the Madani government,” he said in a statement.
