BN takes early lead in Mahkota poll


Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah received 3,119 votes, outpacing PN’s candidate Haizan Jaafar, who secured 1,088 votes.

(FMT) – Barisan Nasional has taken an early lead in the by-election for the Mahkota state seat in Johor, according to unofficial results and based on early voting.

BN’s Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah is said to have secured 3,119 votes, ahead of his Perikatan Nasional rival, Haizan Jaafar, who has only garnered 1,088 ballots.

A total of 4,510 military personnel and their spouses, as well as 401 policemen, had cast their ballots during early voting on Tuesday.

There are a total of 66,318 registered voters in Mahkota under the electoral roll for the by-election, which was called following the death of Umno assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.

Sharifah was elected to the Mahkota seat during the 2022 Johor state polls, defeating candidates from Pakatan Harapan, PN and Warisan with a 5,166-vote majority.

Voting for the by-election ended at 6pm today.
